Are you familiar with what a First Communion is?
First Communion is a celebration of the first time a child receives Holy Communion. Holy Communion is one of the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. The First Holy Communion Sacrament is usually scheduled for children 7 or 8 years old, when the child is old enough to seek and understand what Holy Communion represents. Months, somes years weeks of study and preparation lead up to the big event. Children must know what they are undertaking before they can receive their First Communion. Children usually wear nice, fancy dresses and suits for the occasion.
A First Holy Communion is not to be taken lightly. It is the first time that a child receives the Holy Host, or Eucharist. Reception of the Eucharist is a large part of being Catholic. First Holy Communion is an event that is usually celebrated with family and friends, for it enables the child to become more a part of the church service. Children not old enough to receive Holy Communion must wait in the pew of the church while others that have received their First Communion proceed to the front of the church to receive Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass.
